Burger #75 – Mahjong Tiles

Play a little game with “burgers”?

Here is a burger designed out of tiles from the Chinese game Mahjong.  What’s Mahjong you ask?

From Wikipedia:

“Mahjong (Chinese: 麻將; pinyin: má jiàng) is a game for four players that originated in China. Variations for three players are found in Korea, Japan and Malaysia. It is known as three player mahjong. By far, the most common form is the four-sided mahjong.

Mahjong involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck (depending on the variation played, luck can be anything from a minor to a dominant factor in winning). In Asia, mahjong is also popularly played as a gambling game (though may just as easily be played for fun). The stakes can be low, to keep the game interesting and competitive, or can be very high. High stakes may result in aggressive gambling and social behavior just as poker can be a friendly game or high stakes competition. Addictive playing is also linked to health problems.   However, played with the right attitude, again just like poker, it is a very enjoyable and social game. The basic mechanics are easier than it may seem at first. Learning the subtleties of the game and mastering the many variable and highly different variations can take time. It is played with a set of 152 or so tiles of attractive characters and symbols and unlike modern playing cards, varies greatly from set to set. The aesthetics of the game is one of the attractive features of playing mahjong, as the forming of the tiles displays contrasting colours and patterns and appealing symmetry.

The basic concept in most variations is relatively simple, each player receives thirteen tiles. In turn players draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the fourteenth drawn tile to form four groups (melds) and a pair (head). There are fairly standard rules about how a piece is drawn, stolen from another player (melded), the use of dragons and winds, the kinds of melds and order of dealing and play. However there is still lots of room for variations and all of the latter can change a little, while in contrast the point system, the minimum hand necessary to win and the tiles used vary greatly.”

Labbit x Burger

Artist Frank Kozik does it again with his Kid Robot Labbit series.  These labbits are soft vinyl toys with interchangeable mouth pieces.  This particular one has the best option of a Burger!

Other options it comes with are a mustache, zipper and legs (as if he is swallowing someone).  Check out the different versions and other cool stuff at the Kid Robot Store. ([])

Burger #72 – Eggplant

Purple haze all in my brain…

Today’s burger is a carved eggplant design.  Did you know that, while typically used as a vegetable, the eggplant is actually classified as a berry?  Check out this recipe for an actual Eggplant Burger from Allrecipies.com.

Ingredients

• 1 eggplant, peeled and sliced into 3/4 inch rounds
• 1 tablespoon margarine
• 6 slices Monterey Jack cheese
• 6 hamburger buns, split
• 6 leaves lettuce
• 6 slices tomato
• 1/2 onion, sliced
• 1/2 cup dill pickle slices
• 1 (20 ounce) bottle ketchup
• 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
• 2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard

Directions

1. Place the eggplant slices on a plate, and cook in the microwave for about 5 minutes, or until the centers are cooked.
2. Melt margarine in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry eggplant slices until lightly toasted on each side, and place one slice of cheese onto each one. Cook until cheese has melted, and remove from the skillet.
3. Place eggplant on hamburger buns, and allow each person to top with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, and dress with ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard.

Simple enough and a decent substitute for when you might need a burger hiatus (blasphemy!).  ([])

Hey kids, remember to brush and floss daily.  Though it’s a good idea to floss everyday for healthy teeth, I wonder how many actually do it.  Hmmm.. maybe brush and “burger” daily would be a more appealing option?  ([])

So this burger design wasn’t planned and unfortunately,  only a camera phone around, so please excuse the low quality photo.  Was out eating and decided to make a burger out of the rice and beans.   Maybe if I plant these beans, they will grow into a burger?  ([])

What you “seed” is what you get…

I never knew the appeal of sunflower seeds.  Is it just for the taste?  Or the act of chewing on something?  Cause you do all this work and the actual part that you eat is minuscule.  I would much rather eat a burger.  Oh well, here is burger art created out of sunflower seeds.  ([])

Okay, so you have to watch this music video by ZZ Top – Burger Man.  Basically a guy turns into a mutant burger creature and kidnaps a waitress at the local burger spot, only to be rescued by the burger flipping chef.  It’s definitely a WTF, but so burgerly awesome! ([])
