Bonus Burger365 – Star Wars Jawas

Have you seen Star Wars Remix yet? This website celebrates the Star Wars universe by featuring non traditional “artwork”, similar to some of the things I was doing for Burger365. Anyone can submit a Star Wars themed piece by “remixing”  the world around them.

I was honored when Skull-A-Day‘s Noah Scalin asked me to submit a few pieces as part of the Star Wars Remix launch.  Of course I had to create some Bonus Burger365 pieces and came up with these “Jawa Burgers”.

Skull Appreciation Day

Today, June 4th, is the first annual Skull Appreciation Day.

Burger365 for Skull Quilt Project

Here is my contribution to the Skull Quilt Project for Skull Appreciation Day mailed off today.  I reworked the image from the Burger365 – Oil Painting to include a human skull overlayed on top of the burger skull image. The finished quilts will be shown in a gallery with other skull artwork and sales will go towards a great charity. If you’re in Richmond from June 3rd to July 8th, be sure to check out the exhibition.

Burger365 Gallery 321-365

Burger #365 – Cake

Let me eat cake!

The Burger365 project is complete! Let’s celebrate with a special “Burger Cake”, complete with actual hamburger topping. Of food items, the cake is probably the most popular item to be decorated like a hamburger, and we have seen many around the web. I definitely had to give it a shot, and thought it was a fitting way to celebrate the end. Hopefully this one “takes the cake” (*groan*). Now, who want’s a slice? Thanks again to J for helping me out with this one! You’re awesome.

So now what? I have just completed 365 “burgers” in 365 days. But, just because there are  no more “Burger365” pieces to create, I will still continue use the burgers as a theme in my artwork.  There are still many other ideas that I was not able to get to, so when I finish those, they will become “Bonus Burgers”. Also, I will be working on “Burger365: Redux”, where I will recreate select existing Burger365 pieces and make them even better.

The Everything Burger website will still continue, as I will try to bring you fresh burger content from around the web (something I had focused less on as I got more involved with the project). Burgers are still everywhere, people keep eating them and there continues to be great burger related items all over the place. This project was my little contribution to that world.

What have I learned from completing a 365 daily project? Lots of things… from different art techniques and styles, to time management and focus. I tried to use different methods of art and mediums throughout the project to make sure everything was unique. I was able to learn such trades as cross stitch, latch hook, and other things that I would never have even thought of trying. I worked on my painting, drawing, and digital art techniques to make them better as well. One really needs to have dedication and will power to finish a project such as this, and I am definitely proud of what I have accomplished. There were many late nights up trying to perfect some of the pieces, but it was worth it. I look back over the year and sometimes I’m surprised about how fast it went by, yet other times it seems like so long ago. An artist always should strive to learn, evolve, and create as much as possible, and this project is definitely a good vehicle for that.

    

Thank you to everyone who was involved, everyone who contributed an idea or made a comment,  all the fans who checked out the site, etc. Even though this ultimately was a personal growth project, it’s nice to know people appreciate and like the things that I am doing. You all have helped in one way or another. I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have.

    

Thanks to my partner in “Art” crime Gary Lockwood aka Freehand Profit for starting his Mask365 project concurrently.  When Gary and I set out, I couldn’t imagine what we would go through, how the project would evolve for each of us respectively, and what we would accomplish. Make sure you check out his site and congratulate him for finishing too. His art and skill level is definitely above and beyond the normal realm of artists out there. There are big things coming for him and it is a honor to be able to watch his development. Congrats bro, we did it.

Thanks to my mom who also contributed to this site and project with her clay sculpture burgers. It’s always nice to have support and love from family and friends. Keep up the great clay sculpture work.

 

A very special thank you shout out to my lovely girlfriend Janice(J), who first – gave me the Skull-A-Day book, which planted the idea of a daily project in my head, second – supported me along the way, sacrificing various time/events that we may have missed out on, third – helped out with many of the pieces, and fourth – modeled for and took some of the photos. Without her, the project would not have turned out as well as it did.  Plus, she actually likes burgers more than I do.

Burger #364 – Oil Painting

Based on an In-N-Out “Double Double”, here is an oil painting in the style of the classic “Skull & Crossbones” image. Inspired by “Panda Bread“, this particular loaf of bread has a special surprise “burger filling” inside. Thanks to J for help with this one, as well as Melissa for letting us borrow her nifty bread mixer. Maybe next time we’ll figure out how to make it actually taste like an actual burger too. ([])

Burger #362 – Latch Hook

Hooks and latchers…

The latch hook process is a bit slow, involving a simple tool that pulls loops of yarn through a thicker base. I’m pleased to share this resulting Burger365 image with you as I was happy with how it turned out. It actually looks pretty cool on the reverse side as well. Only three more left to go! ([])

Burger #361 – Popsicle

How many licks?

With the weather being pretty wacky in Los Angeles, summer can’t get here fast enough. Then there will be time for the beach, barbeques, popsicles and of course, flame grilled burgers. Would they ever make a hamburger flavored popsicle? If so, I can imagine it looking like this. ([])

Burger #360 – Tofu

I pity the “fu”…

For all you vegetarians out there, this isn’t your typical tofu burger. Along with accompanying fries and drink, this tofu burger was made for your viewing pleasure, rather than consumption. Only five more Burger365 pieces left! ([])

Burger #359 – Denim

Feeling blue?

Not to be confused with the burger image created out of a pair of jeans, this burger was constructed from various pieces of denim fabric. Like burgers, denim fabric is an American staple. No doubt some of you are eating burgers while wearing denim jeans at this instance. ([])

Burger #358 – Paper Cranes

Paper Cranes for Japan

Over 250 paper cranes were created to form today’s Burger365 image. In Japanese culture, the paper crane is a symbol of hope and goodwill. Legend has it, that one is granted a wish after folding 1000 cranes. After the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan a few months ago, the “Paper Cranes for Japan” project set out to create 100,000 paper cranes, which would then be matched by a $200,000 donation. Amazingly, they greatly surpassed their goal:

“We just tallied 1 million cranes! The incredible, worldwide response to Paper Cranes for Japan has exceeded our wildest hopes. Not only has the Bezos Family Foundation doubled its initial donation to $400,000, an anonymous donor has come forward to add $100,000–making $500,000 for Japan!”

Japan still needs help though. If you haven’t already, there is still time to donate to the American Red Cross in its relief efforts for Japan. And if you’re in the LA area, be sure to stop by the LACMA this weekend to see a very special related exhibit. ([])
